Facebook announced yesterday that they will no longer allow promotion of ICO projects. They feel their ads pose a high risk of being misleading or deceptive.

At 2100NEWS we foresaw this issue long ago. We recognised that while cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology hold great promise for the future, they are also the perfect breeding ground for criminals and scammers.

Facebook said that many companies who are advertising binary options, ICOs and cryptocurrencies are not currently operating in good faith.

Rob Leathern, Facebook’s product management director said that “We’ve created a new policy that prohibits ads that promote financial products and services that are frequently associated with misleading or deceptive promotional practices, such as binary options, initial coin offerings and cryptocurrency”

Facebook has faced a lot of criticism following their handling of the alleged fake news promotions ran on their website by Russian agents in an effort to influence the US elections in 2016. They can ill afford to be seen as passive in what may turn out be another major scandal in the future.

But Facebook alone does not have the resources required to weed out all the bad actors. They have admitted themselves saying that. “This policy is intentionally broad while we work to better detect deceptive and misleading advertising practices”, they said.
